Adam Hickey won a Championship debut for Durham at Southport in 2016 because of his potential as a spin bowler, gaining preference to Ryan Pringle, but it was 20-odd as a batsman to stem a second-innings collapse that also helped edge them to victory, a reminder that he had been an opening batsman before Durham encouraged him to work on his spin. That progress was hindered in 2017 when he broke his right collarbone in the field attempting to take a catch against Lancashire. Hickey was also named in the England Under-19 squad for the 2016 World Cup in Bangladesh. His father, Darren, played for Durham's 2nd XI during their early days as a first-class county.
